You argue Mnemo into a position. It pushes back, argument by argument — and that is where you notice your knowledge thinning out.

An exchange in which argument and counter-argument appear in turn

Understanding something and being able to defend it are two different levels. Reading, you nod along inwardly; arguing, you have to put the thing into words yourself, order it and hold it against objections. That is exactly where it shows what you have really grasped and what merely sounded familiar.

Learning research ranks activities by how much you do yourself: listening, taking notes, producing something, exchanging with someone. Exchange sits at the top — not because talking is magic, but because another party makes gaps visible that you would not notice alone. An objection you cannot answer is a gap you would otherwise have walked past.

There is also an effect that appears when explaining: arguing on behalf of someone else makes people try harder than they do for themselves — they read more carefully, examine their own position more critically, correct errors more readily. We work more thoroughly for someone else than for ourselves.

In Mnemorya you pick a position and Mnemo takes the other side. There is no scoring and no winning — what remains at the end is which of your arguments held and which did not. Whatever did not hold, you can take with you as material.

The research behind it

The studies this method rests on. Each one is verifiable through its DOI — looking them up is very much the point.

  2. The protégé effect: pupils asked to teach a character tried harder than those learning for themselves — they read longer, monitored themselves better and corrected errors more readily. The effect was clearest among the weaker learners.
