The video stops where you are meant to answer something — and that is exactly what keeps you present.

Watching videos feels like learning. You understand everything, it flows, nothing snags. That is precisely the problem: understanding in the moment and retaining afterwards are two different things, and a video that runs straight through never checks whether one becomes the other.
On top of that, attention does not hold. After a few minutes the mind drifts — you keep looking and are no longer there. The video lesson intervenes exactly here: it stops and asks a question about what just ran. That breaks the drifting, and it forces you to produce what you just heard rather than letting it pass by.
The effect is well documented and larger than you would expect: people questioned partway through a video demonstrably drift less, take more notes and do better on the final test. One side finding is striking — those questioned found the final test less burdensome. Regular quizzing takes away test anxiety rather than creating it.

The research behind it
The studies this method rests on. Each one is verifiable through its DOI — looking them up is very much the point.
The core finding. Students watched a 21-minute lecture; some received brief questions in between. That group drifted less, took more notes and performed better at the end — while also finding the final test less burdensome.
